If you
are a veggie skeptic, painstakingly avoiding those leafy
greens at all costs, be prepared to experience a major
change of heart.
The biggest mistake one can possibly make at a restaurant
like Mezze, is letting your eye lock onto the succulent
seafood, meat or dessert portion of the menu and subconsciously
drift away from the veggies. Turn back. When you dig your
teeth into their mouthwatering spinach fritters, you’ll
be oh so glad you did.
The word “mezze” is Greek for appetizer.
Kali’s Mezze restaurant is owned by the slightly
more upscale Kali’s Court, and the food is equally
as wonderful.
Because of the appetizer portion size of each entrée,
munchers can divulge themselves in three or four items
from the menu each.
If you go with a large group (and I highly suggest that
you do), make sure everyone orders something different.
Before you know it, you’ll have ordered everything
on the menu and some items twice.
The drinks however, you’ll want to keep for yourself.
Screw sharing. Many of the wines were tasty but the Sangrias
were the real home run. Mezze serves well-known white sangria,
made with fresh fruit and white wine that is wonderfully
fruity and light and goes well with damn near everything
on the varied menu.
Some standout performances by the Chef include the grape
leaves ($4.95) and the spinach fritters (3.95) from the
veggie menu, the baked oysters ($6.95) and the shrimp raki
(6.95) from Seafood and that oh so marvelous Baby Lamb
Chop (8.95) from Meat and Poultry.
If by this point in the meal, you feel as though your
insides are going to explode all over the beautifully candle
lit linen tablecloth, don’t get discouraged. Take
a breather, and get back in the game. You’ve still
got the whole dessert menu to get through.
Pretty much anything on the dessert menu is not going
to disappoint you, but if you’re looking for a sinful
delight, go with my fav the Raspberry Torte ($4.95). It
sounds kind of boring, and probably is mistakenly overshadowed
by the Tiramisu ($4.95) and Baklava ($4.95) quite often,
but good lord, give it a try. It’s insane good.
The only thing that really wasn’t so good at Kali’s
Mezze was the service. Our poor sweating waiter was one
of three servers for the entire restaurant, which went
from completely empty to wall-to-wall full in an hour.
And with each person ordering four or five plates, the
servers were on major overdrive trying to keep food in
front of everyone. If you choose to go to Mezze, be prepared
to wait a bit for the wonder. It is well worth it.
